Nightly visitations and psychic occurrences are phenomenon experienced by many individuals world wide. The experiences range from reported demonic afflictions, ghostly visions to out of body experiences. Traditionally, such experiences that are categorized as demonic or spirit visitations are accompanied by physical manifestations such as paralysis, an inability to breath, and a perception of drawn out time. This experience is known as sleep paralysis. However, there are other instances where individuals will experience strange visions and sensations in during the night, including an out of body experience, where an individual will feel as if they are leaving their bodies and floating above themselves. However, as the research shows, the neurological components of these experiences are similar.

Misty began researching such phenomenon due to her personal experiences since the age of 12 in which she would see people, lights or inhuman creatures within her room after waking from sleep. She came to know of them as night terrors. When first told about sleep paralysis, she did not believe it to pertain to her situation due to the fact that there is no paralysis involved during her experiences. However, the research has shown that while her experiences were not covered within the research that is presented in this article, the condition may be similar in regards to the active mechanisms within the brain that are involved. Misty is continuing literature reviews regarding sleep paralysis and the night terrors she continues to experience.

Disclaimer: Misty is not presenting these facts as a way to explain away such experienced phenomenon like night visitations, OBEs or night terrors. This article, which is a review of current psychological/neurological research regarding sleep paralysis and the associated hallucinations, is merely an attempt to understand the functioning within the human brain involved with such phenomenon. Misty's personal stance is that not enough is known about such phenomenon to be able to say if the actions within the brain are creating such experiences or if what occurs in the brain is a mere symptom of something else occurring outside of the brain.
